usheru at BAM: Embracing the Creative Mentality of Filmmaking and Beyond

From the 10th to the 14th of July 2023, usheru attended the Bogotá Audiovisual Market (BAM). This vibrant event served as a melting pot of ideas and discussions. Its primary focus were creative aspects of filmmaking and the far-reaching impact that meticulous film production can have on the final product.

Throughout the event, BAM provided an engaging platform for filmmakers and industry professionals to explore diverse themes. Some of those were ethnic audiovisual accessibility, international distribution opportunities, impact film production, and environmentally sustainable content creation.

Inclusivity and Diversity in the Audiovisual Sector

The heart of BAM’s strategic efforts lay in promoting inclusivity and diversity in the audiovisual sector. An extensive program was designed to address crucial aspects of accessibility and representation, aiming to create a more inclusive film industry. The festival also delved into the dynamics of distribution and the potential of international funds to foster collaboration and global reach for filmmakers.

Moreover, thematic meetings, graced by esteemed experts from various corners of the audiovisual industry, offered valuable insights into innovative development initiatives, the editorial lines of film festivals, and the intricacies involved in sales and representation. These sessions not only provided practical knowledge but also stimulated meaningful dialogue.

Collaboration between different countries in the domain of film co-production took centre stage during the event. Representatives from film institutions of invited territories and active producers shared their experiences. They offered valuable insights into the legal, financial, creative, and logistical aspects of co-producing with Colombia. Such collaborative endeavours bolstered international ties and opened doors to promising future partnerships.

The Growth of Colombian Film Industry

A notable achievement celebrated during BAM was the exponential growth of the Colombian film industry. Over the past two decades, Colombia witnessed a remarkable surge in film production. It went from a mere three releases in 2003 to an impressive tally of over fifty films in 2022. This noteworthy feat was largely attributed to the implementation of the Film Law. It played a crucial role in nurturing the dreams of aspiring filmmakers and propelling the industry forward.

Taking a more artistic and creative approach, BAM’s 2023 edition revolved around the captivating theme, “The Conscience of Sound.”

Firstly, this theme prompted participants to delve into the profound relationship between images and sound. They recognised the profound impact that audio elements have in shaping immersive cinematic experiences.

Secondly, it offered attendees an opportunity to explore the subtle nuances of sound and its ability to evoke emotions and enrich storytelling.

usheru’s Federico Beltran found the BAM experience highly enriching. We interacted with an array of industry professionals, including producers, directors, actors, screenwriters, editors, and post-production personnel.

Lastly, we continue to keep our fingers on the pulse of the artistic interests that drive the film industry.
